Buyer Beware...a Dell Story
I just recently posted on Dell Community Forums about a wierd order lately from Dell. I ordered a new monitor on the phone. I always check online then make a phone order. most of the time you can get the company to waive shipping costs by doing that. Well Since I checked online and put my monitor in the cart to see the taxes and total price...seems Dell thought that was an order. I never clicked Confirm check out of BUY..or anything like that. Seems they were sending me another monitor a Day after I received the one I ordered off the phone.....here is the link to the Dell community forums and the fall out I had with one of their PREMIER posters there. A guy that has helped many people there..but always with some air of superiority.
See for yourselves...

Wow, that is just sad. I have never purchased through dell, and after reading that, I don't think I will. Good luck getting it all sorted out.

Never liked Dells to begin with. It's better to build your own machine if you have the know how or a good techie friend - it's normally cheaper and you can get away without all that software crap you don't need.

I hear ya! Looks like my next computer is going to be a home built (again).
I have to admit...this Ultrasharp 2001FP monitor is one of the sweetest monitors for the price. The best I have ever owned too. I paid $559.00 total including tax. The one they were trying to send me was for $602.00 total. now why in the world would I want to buy a second monitor for more money?
I used to build my own computers. Pre-builts for me are just easier. But now I am ticked! I think my next system will be a bare-bones and go from there.

That's why I buy Alienware now. Had a few orders from Dell, and although the orders weren't messed up, the systems delivered always performed pretty badly. Alot of the hardware gave me problems. I got my Alienware, no problems with the order, and the quality of the computer is much better, and for pretty much the same price. And as for building your own computer being cheaper. That really depends. Without any discounts from places like Alienware or Dell then yes it is cheaper to build it yourself (as I have done awhile back). But my dad got me a discount on my Dells and this Alienware through his work, so it turned out cheaper that way. Anyways, yeah of all the computers I've owned, the ones I built and the current Alienware are all way better than the Dells I've owned.

hmm...A Mid-Grade Alienware? That sounds like a plan. I could get one of those and upgrade that down the road when I can afford too.
That is all I do with Dell is buy the Mid-Grade line. My Dim 5100 is a decent system. Pretty darn quick and will be "playable" for at least two years.
I always wanted an Alienware....now I have a good excuse!

I'd rethink that. Alienware isn't exactly what it's hyped up to be.

Hmm, I'm considering buying Dell's XPS M170 gaming laptop:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs
Alienware doesn't have GF7800 video cards in their laptops yet, so the M170 has the lead performance-wise.
I considered Alienware but can't stand the Roswell Alien motif on all their items.

The reason why im so good at fixing computers today is because one of my first real computers was a DELL. This thing was a real lemon and the costomer service people wouldn't help me just because I added a few parts. Never again will I own a Dell. I build all my computers now.

Alienware = BADDD...
You can get all the same parts and better for MUCH cheaper price. Hell you can even get better looking cases if you want a cool look.
This is what im going to get in a few weeks, for my upgraded computer.
Completely transparent thick acrylic, Got good reviews it even has slots for 5 fans. only $77 bucks,

I don't think adding components will be much of an issue for laptops
If I do go with the M170, it will be my 1st laptop. I've managed to make due with Pocket-PC GPRS phones until now.
I've built every PC I've ever owned previously, so the M170 will be quite a leap for me.

Weird incident, my PCs from Dell and I've never had any problems with it, nor did I have any problems in the buying/recieving of it as a whole. However, I ordered it online, and not via telephone. A question though, why did you add it to your cart in the first place? I'm pretty sure when I was filtering through the options for my PC I never once had to add it to my cart until I got everything right, I could figure out the price and what I needed before I added it to my cart.
So why did you add it to your cart, then order it by phone? Was there some other benefit from adding it to your cart that I missed? Meh, I'm not sure how their phone system works in relation to peoples online accounts, just wondering.
I only bought the PC as a whole from Dell though, and I'm happy with it. If I ever upgrade though, it won't be from Dell that's for sure.

I had a similar problem with them when I ordered my Laptop. Inspiron 9300... I specifically asked for installation cds as I know that Dell recently changed their policy on shipping every machine with the source CDs to support the purchase. So when I ordered my system I paid an extra $40 for the software to ship with the unit as it used to for free in the past. Of course it did not come. Upon calling them they said its their policy not to send software any longer, and I knew that. That's why on my order I was billed for the cds ahead of time.
They finally agreed to send me the software, but billed me both for the CDs from two different shipping sources again, AND bill me for 2 Express mail shipping... Now I'm in Alaska and that is one heck of a price for shipping added on for 2 packages that I originally ordered and should have been in my original shipment.
Dell service has slipped drastically since their prime... They are no longer about service for their customers. they are 100% about what they can get away with... Just like all the rest of the unscruplous online vendors out there now.
Goes to show you . do something online anymore, might as well open your wallet and burn a few hundreds. cause its the same result, anyway you look at it.

The service sucks, the products don't. Very stable and well built products.
